Cataract treatment

How do we treat cataracts?

Cataracts can be spotted during a routine eye examination. Your optometrist will refer you to an ophthalmologist when your vision deteriorates and it is starting to affect your quality of life and interfering with your everyday activities. The ophthalmologist will discuss the potential visual expectations following the cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is usually an outpatient procedure, carried out under local anaesthesia. The ophthalmologist replaces the old lens with a new, clear, plastic implant. One eye is treated at a time.

Wearing an eye patch is recommended for a short period after the cataract surgery to protect the eye. Post-surgery medications can be prescribed for around three to four weeks.

After the removal of a cataract, vision is normally instantly improved. Once fully recovered, many patients find that they have a good, clear distance vision. However, new glasses are commonly needed, especially for reading, as the prescription often changes following the operation. We recommend waiting 6 weeks after your operation to come in for a new eye examination.

Regardless of symptoms and/or conditions we recommend having regular eye examinations at least every two years.

If you have other conditions in addition to the cataracts, it is best to consult with your optometrist to discuss the pros and cons associated with surgery.
